Atheists Sue Over World Trade Center 9/11 Cross: Should Christian Symbol Be Removed?

A national atheist group has filed a lawsuit to block the inclusion of the famous '9/11 cross' from a memorial at the World Trade Center site.

The cross, a fused steel t-joint which served to gird the towers before they fell, was unearthed from the rubble following the attacks. This is hardly the first time an atheist's interest group has sued over a perceived religious injustice. The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued President Bush, the then-governor of Wisconsin and other officials over a designated National Day of Prayer in 2008 (another group in Arizona did so again in March 2011) and the Central Arkansas Coalition of Reason sued because it was being forced to pay for an anti-God bus ad campaign. Most recently, five Texans sued Gov. Rick Perry to prevent him from appearing in an August 6 prayer rally.

Missouri River Oil Spill: 900 Gallons Spill In North Dakota

Damage around a North Dakota oil well site where officials believe floodwaters shifted a storage tank, causing at least 900 gallons of oil to spill into the Missouri River, does not appear to be significant, state health department officials said Friday.

The tank is at a well site owned by Ryan Exploration Inc., which has committed to cleaning up the mess. The site is among about 40 on the flood plain southwest of Williston shut down under state orders when the river started to rise in May. Some companies emptied storage tanks of oil and refilled them with water to hold them down in the high water.

"If everybody could have predicted how much water we were going to get, these wells could have been closed down sooner and theoretically all the oil pumped out of these tanks before they were flooded, " State Water Quality Director Dennis Fewless said Friday.

State health officials said another company discovered the spill Wednesday and immediately started efforts to contain the oil and clean it up. Ryan Exploration crews also have been working at the site, said Kris Roberts, state environmental geologist.

"They've been extremely cooperative, " Roberts said.

Ryan Exploration reported a minor spill in 2006, but there have been no major complaints against the Denver-based company, said Bruce Hicks, assistant director of the state's Oil and gas Division.

"I haven't seen them on the radar before, " Fewless said.

The tank held 68 barrels of oil and at least 20 barrels are believed to have leaked. A barrel holds 42 gallons. Roberts said the tank stopped leaking when the level of oil inside reached the level of water outside. A second tank with 210 barrels of oil did not shift and was not leaking.

"There was potential to have more leaks out of those tanks, " Fewless said. "It's the best we could hope for a bad situation. "

The North Dakota spill is much smaller than an estimated 42, 000-gallon spill from a ruptured pipeline two weeks ago into the Yellowstone River in Montana.

Tim Ryan of Denver, owner of the site where the tank leaked, told The Bismarck Tribune it might not have been emptied because the water rose too fast.

"Clearly, I should have been more prepared, but it didn't occur to me that the water would go over our 10-foot-dike, " Ryan said. "When I heard this, I felt terrible. I don't think I slept an hour (Wednesday) night. "

Ryan estimated the cleanup cost at his well site at $500, 000.

"We saw a couple of questionable spots, but my nightmare was that we would see one big slick, " he said.

No Cell Phone-Brain Tumor Link, Latest Study Finds

A new study is throwing another wrench into the cell phone-cancer debate.

Despite the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)'s decision to classify cell phones as a possible carcinogen earlier this year, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that cell phone use doesn't seem to increase the risk of a noncancerous brain tumor.

A study of nearly 3 million Danish adults showed that those who used a cell phone for more than 11 years were not more likely to develop a noncancerous brain tumor, called an acoustic neuroma or a vestibular schwannoma, than people who don't use a cell phone or only started using one recently. Even though acoustic neuromas are noncancerous, scientists say they are still important in determining whether there is a cancer risk from cell phones, according to Reuters.

And even more, tumors were not more frequent on the side of the head where the cell phone was most commonly used, nor did the tumor size have anything to do with the amount of cell phone use, according to the study.

But we're not out of the woods yet -- study researcher Dr. Joachim Schuz, of the World Health Organization's IARC (the same organization that classified cell phones as a possible carcinogen) said that even long-term cell phone users in the study haven't been using the devices long enough to completely rule out a cancer-cell phone link.

"As most cell phone users started their use only from the early 1990s onwards, " Schuz told Reuters, "we have only up to 15 years of observation time of larger numbers of users -- which is perhaps too short to see an effect, if there is any. "

Most studies in the past have not shown a link between cell phone use and cancer. One of the largest studies exploring the link, the 13-country INTERPHONE study, showed that cell phone use, frequency and call duration did not seem to affect the risk of developing a brain tumor.

And an article in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives published this year also showed that using a cell phone for 10 to 15 years didn't seem to affect brain cancer risk.

But as was the problem that Schuz acknowledged with his study, people haven't been using cell phones long enough to definitively know their effects after a long period of time, according to the American Cancer Society.
